Passion or Purpose?

When do we know if we should really chase our passion? How can we differentiate it from purpose? Joyce Pring talks with Coach Lyqa Maravilla, on the journey into finding the passion and as a byproduct rather than a foundation.

 What Entails Passion?

○ Passion as Coping with Pain – Passion may sometimes be something that gets you going and makes you feel good for a bit. But, it is more than just an emotion where one is feeling good about what he is doing, it's more about pain. Finding passion entails working as hard as one ever has in life to which one has to really keep going even without recognition or monetary gain. (LM)

○ Passion as Byproduct – Passion becomes a byproduct when someone desires to do something that was substantial with one’s time and with the skillset. Along with the new passion, passion comes after knowing that the skillset one has been doing is meaningful with his time. (JP)

What is Purpose?

Purpose has a bigger direction whereas passion follows after this through the growth and creation of love out of the things that point out a certain goal. (JP)

○ It is what will keep one going no matter what. Like building a fire where passion is the spark while keeping the flame ignited is purpose. (LM)

Dealing with Negativity

Coach Lyqa shared her story about offering her services to produce and edit videos for people but no one really said yes. And because there was a strong need, and no one else was willing to do it, she started doing it herself. And sometimes as people would say that things should have been this or that, she firmly believes that instead of putting each other down, people should help each other up.

Once a person puts their opinion and the masses don’t agree, that person gets shut down, belittled, bullied, and hurt in many different ways. It’s a strength everyone needs to hone because if not, people will just be dragged and will be flailing aimlessly through the wind that trying to follow wherever the herd goes, and really not standing up for anything. (JP)

What’s the difference between fear and anxiety?

○ Fear – There has to be something that is a legitimate source of that fear that can be point at. Fear is tangible and physical. It is a response to something that actually exists.

○ Anxiety – One can’t really point at something that is a source of anxiety. It's a general feeling that something bad is going to happen even if there's no sign at all. Unlike fear that can be addressed, anxiety is the fear from the unknown and from the intangible.

How to Deal with these?

○ Having a therapist and seeking professional help. This isn't something to do once one is at the point of despair. Even if one is not experiencing an episode yet, they can still go to a therapist to help unpack unwanted feelings.

○ Support system. Have a community you can trust. Having a safe space is also important. It is where one can unpack certain things without judgment.

You don’t have to wait until you’re at your breaking point already before you ask for help.

Do Things Out of Love

If one is posting, doing, or saying something out of fear, it is not good. But if someone is doing it out of love, even if the tone is kind of aggressive or challenging, then it is now out of love and is something to be proud of. (LM)

Easier said than done. Intention changes everything. That’s the truth. The battle in one’s thoughts that we had deal with on a daily basis is real, but it is important to be able to navigate one own’s life. (JP)
