Is depression a sign of weak faith?
What do we hold on to when life feels unbearably heavy? In this episode of Adulting with Joyce Pring, I’m joined by our friends from yesHEis, Sigrid and Coach Noreen, to talk about grief, mental health, and how faith transforms even our deepest pains into purpose.
What is hope in the middle of struggle?
Hope is an anchor rooted in the truth of God’s word. When grief, depression, or anxiety feel overwhelming, hope becomes the reminder that God’s promises are unchanging, even when our emotions aren’t. What you focus on, you will feel. But the truth of God’s word is what remains constant.
How to stay grounded in faith during hard times
1. Practice absolute dependence on God
Instead of pushing yourself to “get better” on your own, lean into God’s presence through prayer, worship, and scripture, even if it’s just playing His word on repeat.
2. Focus on truth, not just feelings
Feelings are valid, but they don’t always tell the truth. Anchor yourself in scripture so that over time, your emotions follow what God says about you.
3. Create safe spaces for healing
Before truth can take root, people need grace and presence. Offer a listening ear, comfort, and compassion to those who are struggling. It’s a ministry in itself.
“You don’t go straight to correction. First, you comfort, you soothe, you listen, you stay present. That’s what makes people feel safe enough to receive truth later.
”
How to turn grief into purpose
1. Share your testimony, even when it’s messy
You don’t need to wait until you’re “okay” to talk about God’s goodness. Sharing how you hold on in weakness can be powerful.
2. Serve beyond yourself
As Bianca reminded us, while we go through personal struggles, others face hunger and poverty every day. Get involved in causes that shift your focus outward and bring hope to others.
3. Remember, pain has a Gospel context
Grief and struggle are not wasted, they can be transformed into ministry and encouragement when surrendered to God.
Encouragement for anyone struggling right now
1. You’re not alone
Grief and mental health challenges are part of the human experience, but God’s presence never leaves you.
2. Start small
Even simple acts like prayer, worship, or journaling can ground you in peace.
3. Find your “tahanan”
Be with people and communities that make you feel safe while gently guiding you toward truth.
4. Choose purpose in pain
Let your struggles become a testimony that blesses others.
“Our struggles don’t disqualify us from hope because they can point us back to the goodness of God.”
