The MOST underrated leadership skill young people should have

What makes a leader truly powerful? In this episode, I sit down with the legendary Francis Kong, speaker, trainer, author, and mentor to thousands of leaders and entrepreneurs. Together, we explore timeless lessons on leadership, family, and faith that transcend success and delve into what truly matters in life.

Mixing wisdom with humor in talks

Wisdom is best received when it’s wrapped with humor. A great talk should not only inform but also uplift, engage, and connect with people on a heart level. Who doesn’t remember a talk better when it makes you laugh? Humor disarms us and makes wisdom stick

Do great speakers still get nervous?

Surprisingly, yes. Even the most seasoned speakers feel jitters before stepping on stage. But instead of fighting it, Francis uses nervousness as fuel to stay sharp and connected with his audience. Sometimes we think being nervous disqualifies us, but it actually means you care about the message you’re about to share. Young people today face the pressure of success, promotions, and high-paying offers. Francis encourages us to stay grounded in principles because career growth without purpose often leads to burnout.

Skills & habits of thriving leaders

1. Discipline

Keeping rhythm and routine.

2. Humility

Leading with service, not ego.

3. Consistency

Doing the small things daily that no one applauds.

The Danger of shortcut mentality

True growth takes time, sacrifice, and long-term commitment. Shortcuts may give results, but they won’t build character. We live in a fast-food generation where everything is instant. But character takes time. I always remind myself: slow growth is still growth.

  • Leading with Humility & Purpose From the Start - Young leaders don’t need to wait until they’re older to make an impact. Humility, honesty, and a learner’s heart can open doors of influence right away.

  • Resting Deliberately as a Powerful Leader - Rest doesn’t mean laziness, but it means recharging strategically. For Francis, rest is part of leadership. A drained leader can’t serve effectively.

  • Discipline Starts With Routine - Discipline is the art of rhythm. Without rhythm, things deteriorate. It’s not glamorous, but routine is what builds both character and results.

Lessons from family: unlearning unhealthy patterns

Parenting requires breaking negative cycles from our own upbringing. Leadership in the family means choosing healthier patterns to pass down. We’re not doomed to repeat our parents’ mistakes. God gives us the chance to rewrite stories for the next generation. Kids don’t just need provision, but they need visible affection between parents. Love expressed in the home gives children confidence, security, and resilience.
